About this service

Subtitles carry meaning and lose register. 貴様 comes across as a flat “you”, when in fact it is openly hostile — say it in a real conversation and you damage the relationship. Mainichi Nihongo attaches, to each expression, how polite or rough it is, what it implies about the speaker, whether it can be said to someone senior, whether it is safe in real life, and whether it belongs to fiction only.

The material is in six parts: kana (hiragana, katakana, long vowels, small tsu, contracted sounds, loanwords); expressions common in anime; sentence endings and contractions (〜てる, 〜ちゃう, じゃん, っけ and the rest — the usual reason spoken Japanese is impossible to catch); game vocabulary; manga vocabulary and onomatopoeia; and streaming / VTuber vocabulary. Textbook, casual and very casual forms are shown side by side.

The engine is the same as Mainichi Eigo: one session a day that runs review, reading, comprehension and writing, with spaced repetition (an SM-2 variant) bringing items back. Your learning data stays in the browser on your own device.

Getting started

  1. Open the site for your native language

    This service is a separate site per native language. Pick yours from the site list at the foot of this page. There is no Japanese edition — this is an app for learning Japanese.

  2. Start the seven-day free trial

    Register an email address, open the link in the confirmation email and set your own password. Everything is unlocked for seven days from that moment, and nothing is charged during the trial.

  3. Begin with kana

    Whether you can read hiragana and katakana changes everything that follows. If you are unsure, work through the kana section first — it goes as far as long vowels, small tsu, contracted sounds and loanwords.

  4. Do one “Today’s lesson”

    Choose a length and review, reading, comprehension and writing are arranged to fit it. Expressions carry their nuance notes — who says this to whom, whether it is safe to use — so you do not end up memorising meaning alone.

  5. Save what you want to keep

    Saved items enter the review queue from the next day. Review runs on Again / Hard / Good / Easy and adjusts the interval for you. The Library search is available at any time.

  6. Buy it if you want to carry on

    When the trial ends the app locks and shows purchase details. Buying with the same email address turns that account into the full version. One payment, no subscription.

Pricing and cancellation

After the seven-day trial there is a single one-time purchase. No monthly plan, nothing else to pay. The price differs by site (by native language) and appears on the checkout screen.

You do not have to cancel the trial. Let it expire, or delete the account — you will never be charged for the trial period.

If you already have a trial or expired account, buying with the same email address activates it. There is no need to start over.

What to know before you start

Frequently asked questions

Can I start if I cannot read Japanese at all?
Yes. The kana section comes first and starts from hiragana and katakana. Skipping it makes everything afterwards harder, so work through it if you are unsure.
Is there a Japanese edition?
No — it is an app for learning Japanese from another first language. Japanese speakers wanting to learn English should look at Mainichi Eigo.
Is it useful if I don’t follow anime or manga?
Yes. Kana, sentence endings and contractions are what make spoken Japanese audible, regardless of what you watch. You can skip the game, manga and streaming sections entirely.
Does it prepare me for the JLPT?
It was not built as exam preparation. The kana, vocabulary and grammar overlap, but there are no exercises in the exam’s format.
Is there anything to pay after buying?
No. It is a one-time purchase with no subscription and no add-ons.
