About this service
Records of weddings and funerals are awkward data to hold. Who you gave what to, who gave what to you: forgetting causes offence, but it is not something you want stored on a stranger’s server either. Otsukiai-chō keeps everything inside your own device (the browser’s IndexedDB). The only thing that reaches our servers is whether you have purchased a paid edition.
Each entry tracks the state of the return gift — not started, preparing, arranged, returned. When you enter an amount, past amounts for the same person are shown, so you never have to hunt for what you gave last time. Memorial service dates from the first anniversary through the fiftieth are calculated for you.
Everything works offline: recording, searching, totals and backups all run without a signal. There is deliberately no feature for storing photographs, PDFs, addresses, phone numbers or bank account numbers.
Getting started

Record what you received or gave
Choose the direction, then enter the date, the person, a category (52 to choose from — celebration money, condolence money, mid-year gifts and so on) and the amount. No account is needed; you can write from the moment you open it.

Mark what needs a return gift
Flagging a received entry keeps it in the outstanding list. You can move it through preparing and arranged as you go.

Register the return and link it
Entering the date and amount of the return gift flips the original entry to “returned”, so you never end up with only one half of the pair.

Back it up regularly
This matters more than anything else. Export the (encrypted) backup file from settings and keep it off the device. CSV and JSON export are also available.
Pricing and cancellation
These are one-time purchases; there is no subscription. The free edition covers up to 20 entries and 20 people with the core features.
Standard (JP ¥1,980, tax included) removes the limits and adds detailed search and local encryption. Premium (JP ¥2,980, tax included) adds memorial-service management, household-level totals and suggested return-gift amounts on top.
What to know before you start

On-device storage is not the same as “completely safe”
If you lose the device, or clear the browser’s site data, the records go with it. We hold no copy. Without a backup, there is no recovery.

Only part of the data is encrypted
Names, event names, item names and notes are stored encrypted; dates and amounts remain in plain text so that search and totals can work. That is a compromise we accepted deliberately.

There is no sync between devices
Your phone and your computer will not line up on their own. To move, export the backup file and load it on the other device.

Some information is out of scope by design
There is no feature for storing photographs, PDFs, addresses, phone numbers or bank account numbers. It is not switched off — it does not exist.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need an account?
- Not to keep records. You can write from the moment you open it. An email address is only used to attach a paid edition to your purchase.
- Where are the records kept?
- Only inside the browser on your own device. Our database has no tables for people, gifts, amounts or memorial services at all. It is structural, not a matter of policy.
- Can I move from free to paid?
- Yes. Your records stay exactly where they are; the limits and feature locks simply come off. Nothing has to be re-entered.
- How far ahead are memorial dates calculated?
- From the first anniversary through to the fiftieth. Enter the date of death and the upcoming services are listed for you.
