About this service
With Japan’s year-end adjustment and tax return, the hard part comes before the arithmetic: working out what applies to you, which certificates you need, and by when. Start researching without knowing that, and you end up reading pages that do not concern you. Shinkoku Check sorts out that first stage from a handful of questions.
What comes back is a checklist. For the year-end adjustment: the forms to hand to your employer and the deduction certificates to gather. For a tax return: the points to confirm against official sources about whether you need to file, and the documents involved. Each item carries the deadline for the relevant tax year and links to the corresponding National Tax Agency or e-Tax page. It prints cleanly if you want it on paper.
It stays usable for free. The questionnaire needs no account, and the result is kept temporarily inside your browser.
Getting started
-
Answer the short questionnaire
Open the quick check and answer brief questions — employment, side income, medical expenses, mortgage, donations. No registration.
-
Receive your checklist
Only the items likely to concern you are listed, separated into what belongs to the year-end adjustment and what belongs to a tax return.
-
Check documents and deadlines
Each item comes with guidance on what to prepare and the deadline for that tax year. Follow the official links to the National Tax Agency or e-Tax to confirm the formal conditions.
-
Print it and keep it to hand
There is a print view. On paper it is easier to work through while dealing with your employer and collecting documents.
Pricing and cancellation
The core is free: the questionnaire, the current year’s checklist, printing and the official links. The result is held temporarily in your browser.
Premium (JP ¥980/year, tax included) adds saving to an account, managing past years, carrying over to next year, email reminders as deadlines approach, CSV export, and removal of ads.
What to know before you start
-
This is a set of pointers, not a filing
It lists things worth confirming. It neither prepares a return nor files anything on your behalf. Confirm the outcome against the National Tax Agency’s official material, and consult your employer, the tax office or a tax accountant as needed.
-
It does not calculate tax or decide whether you must file
No amount is fixed here, and no obligation is determined. It points you to the official sources where those questions are answered.
-
My Number and withholding slips are never stored
There is no feature for entering or keeping your individual number, withholding slip or the contents of deduction certificates. All you answer are short questions about whether something applies.
-
On the free tier the result lives on your device
It is only held temporarily in the browser, so clearing your browsing data clears the result. Print it, or use Premium, if you want it kept.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need an account?
- No. The questionnaire, the checklist and printing all work without one. An account is only needed for saving and reminders.
- Will it tell me whether I need the year-end adjustment or a tax return?
- Not definitively. It indicates which is likely relevant and gives you the items and links to confirm it officially. It does not make the determination itself.
- Is it useful before seeing a tax accountant?
- That is what it is for. Sorting out what to bring and what the open questions are makes the appointment go much further.
- Can I look at previous years?
- The free tier covers the current year’s checklist. Managing past years and carrying over to the next is a Premium feature.
This page explains how the service is used. Where it differs from the Terms of Service or the refund policy, those documents apply.
